Kristin Brown, LMFT
Therapist
I received my Master’s of Clinical Counseling from Point Loma Nazarene University here in San Diego. I previously worked in medical device sales and have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an option in Marketing from California State University, Chico. My clinical experience began at Sharp Mesa Vista hospital, where I was a practicum student therapist providing group therapy to adults with serious mental illness. The majority of my career thus far has been spent working in community mental health, working extensively with individuals and families who are experiencing psychosis, specifically in the prodromal/early/first episode stage. Throughout my work in community mental health, I received formal training through the Beck Institute in various aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as have been certified by Yale University’s PRIME Clinic to administer the Structured Interview for Psychosis Risk Syndromes (SIPS) assessment to determine severity of early symptoms of psychosis. I have also extensively supported individuals who have experienced trauma as well as current and historical suicidal ideation, self-harm and substance use. Your safety, both physically and emotionally, is my priority.
SELF-CONFIDENCE
I utilize primarily a Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) approach, including concepts and techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT); as well as show up in the therapy room with a Person-Centered approach. My hope is that you feel comfortable after our work together to move forward in your life feeling confident in your own ability to identify and follow your own values. Through psychoeducation, collaboration, and active discussion in sessions, I empower clients to feel more comfortable with the unknown and have a greater sense of resilience.
CURIOSITY & OPENNESS
The most common feedback I receive from clients, friends, and colleagues is that I have a calming presence, and I pride myself on meeting my clients where they are at in their therapeutic process. In working with diverse populations, I enjoy collaborating with folks to bridge gaps in access to care and have interesting and engaging conversations about the role of mental health in the systems and groups with which they identify. I like to use light humor as appropriate in sessions as well!
How I Help:
By showing up authentically and with an open mind in sessions, I am able to meet you as you are. I can be very conversational and hold space for your needs while maintaining and modeling healthy boundaries. A core belief of mine is that people are resilient and capable of overcoming challenges that life inevitably throws our way. Thus, using skills and techniques from CBT, ACT, DBT, motivational interviewing, strengths-based modalities and others, I will work with you to increase your confidence in your ability to manage stress, improve relationships and identify your guiding values.
More About Me:
When not wearing my therapist hat I love to spend time in the sun, catch a Padres game, enjoy my husband’s cooking, get out and about with my dog, and do group fitness (usually interval training or yoga). I’ve been to 9 countries outside of the US, 18 states (with a goal to visit all 50), and look forward to continuing to gain worldly experience!
