Dr. Ericka Wray
Psychological Associate
Hello - I have over a decade of professional experience in the mental health field accrued in both the US and Europe. Most of this experience has been spent working with older adolescent and adult populations. I have significant experience providing individual and group therapy to military service members and their families. Through focusing on firefighter mental health issues during my doctoral program (as well as being a “fire wife”), I have also become a specialist in mental health issues within the fire service.
I earned my bachelor’s and master’s in clinical psychology from the University of Munich, Germany where I gained experience working with adults in inpatient and residential settings. After moving to California, I started my doctoral degree in clinical psychology at California Southern University.
My predoctoral internship was completed at an acute psychiatric hospital here in San Diego, focusing on individual and group work with children, adolescents, adults, civilians, as well as active-duty military service members in both inpatient and intensive outpatient programs. Prior to this, I also supervised the hospital’s intake department and crisis help-line, providing triage for acute mental health and chemical dependency issues.
Life Stuck Points
I specialize in helping my clients get unstuck. I assist in transforming suffering into growth and helping propel you forward in life. Such suffering can take on the forms of (but not limited to) depression, anxiety, anger, substance abuse, and/or issues related to our daily routines such as sleeping, eating, sex, work, and how we interact with others. Are you ready to stop suffering and move forward?
Firefighters
The mental health crisis among the fire service community is real, involving special dynamics and challenges. I have spent the past few years researching this crisis in Southern California as a doctoral student and have close personal ties with the community. I am honored to join fire service members on their journey towards wellbeing and to be able to serve those who put their lives on the line for us on the worst days of our lives.
Together we will address the challenges you face at work (both at the station and on calls) as well as on off days - where the issues often seem overwhelming. Regardless of an issue’s origin (such as from childhood, compassion fatigue, trauma, etc.) we will navigate any and all obstacles to get you back to your optimal self. It’s time to take care of YOU.
Psychological Testing
“What’s wrong with me and how can I get better?”- a pretty standard question from those seeking mental health treatment. Psychological testing can reduce the length of treatment by efficiently pinpointing areas of need, while also helping you and your health provider make informed treatment decisions (such as starting medications). By using the most up-to-date and clinically sound psychometric tests, I establish scientifically supported diagnoses and treatment recommendations – helping your course of treatment be more efficient.
How I Help:
I supportively guide my clients beyond their comfort zones in the direction of positive and empowered self-evolution. I help others reevaluate every life event and experience (pleasurable or painful) as an opportunity to learn and to thrive. Through contagious enthusiasm and optimism, we will achieve growth in the direction of your goals and your optimal self – let’s get unstuck!
My approach to treatment is individualized to your needs and integrates modalities of different schools such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Change Therapy (ACT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Systemic Therapy, Schema Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Psychoanalysis.
More About Me:
I was born and raised in Canada and transitioned out of my first career as a professional ballet dancer at age 22 – after 18 years of dedication. I have lived and worked in 6 different countries including Canada, Japan, Australia, Germany, Mexico, and settled down in San Diego as of 2016. My passion for helping others through mental health challenges was identified in my mid-20s – and have found such work to be my life’s calling.
Outside of the office, I enjoy outdoor activities with my firefighter husband and two golden retrievers. I enjoy the beach + sun, SUPing, swimming, pickle ball, cribbage, and any other competitive sports/games. When time permits, I love travelling the world while absorbing multi-cultural experiences and learning new languages (fluent in German + mediocre in French).
